Laminex puts a mid-range kitchen renovation at $20,000 to $50,000 in 2026, a low-budget refresh that keeps the existing layout under $20,000, and a high-end kitchen over $50,000 (Laminex does not say whether its figures include GST). One Auckland renovation company prices luxury kitchens from $90,000 plus GST. These are indicative figures from Laminex, Canstar and renovation companies, not quotes.

The biggest swing factors are cabinetry, benchtop material, and whether plumbing, wiring or walls move. This guide shows the ranges by source, a cost breakdown, flat-pack versus custom, the consent and licensing rules, timelines, and how to compare quotes.

Kitchen renovation cost in NZ: budget, mid-range and high-end

No official price list exists, so the sources are shown side by side. Each defines its tiers differently, and some quote figures plus GST.

Source What it says
Laminex (Mar 2026) Low budget under $20,000; mid-range $20,000 to $50,000; high over $50,000
Canstar $30,000 to $50,000+; the average mid-range makeover can cost up to $50,000
Superior Renovations (Auckland, 2026) Basic $15,000 to $25,000; mid-range $26,000 to $35,000; luxury $90,000 to $138,000+ (all plus GST)
Refresh Renovations (Auckland, 2026) Entry level from about $40,000; mid-range from $60,000; top end $90,000 and above

Reading across them:

  • Budget (under $20,000, Laminex, GST basis not stated): new doors or pre-made cabinets, laminate benchtops, paint and a splashback, with plumbing and wiring left where they are. Laminex says low budgets typically cover cosmetic changes within the existing layout. For small kitchens up to 7m², Superior Renovations quotes $10,520 to $15,000 plus GST for a basic upgrade and $15,000 to $27,600 plus GST for a mid-range refresh.
  • Mid-range ($20,000 to $50,000, Laminex, GST basis not stated): custom cabinetry, stone or engineered stone benchtops and better appliances. Canstar's range is $30,000 to $50,000+. Laminex says this tier can allow some structural upgrades and working with a designer or cabinet maker.
  • High-end (over $50,000, Laminex, GST basis not stated): a new layout, premium benchtops, high-end appliances and features like butler's pantries. Superior Renovations' luxury tier starts at $90,000 plus GST in Auckland.

Canstar suggests a rule of thumb of spending around 3% of your home's market value on the kitchen. Superior Renovations says Auckland runs roughly 10% to 20% above the national average, mostly because of trade labour rates of $120 to $150 an hour. Outside Auckland, its kitchen and bathroom guides put rates at between $70 and $120 an hour. Local kitchen renovators in Auckland can tell you what your area costs.

Kitchen renovation cost breakdown

Superior Renovations publishes this split for a typical $30,000 plus GST kitchen. It is one company's estimate, so use it to sense-check quotes rather than build one.

Item Share Cost (plus GST)
Cabinetry 28% $8,400
Installation and labour 18% $5,400
Appliances 15% $4,500
Benchtops and splashback 11% $3,300
Flooring 7% $2,100
Lighting 5% $1,500
Painting 5% $1,500
Windows and doors 4% $1,200
Designer fees 3% $900
Plumbing 3% $900
Other (permits, misc) 1% $300

Item ranges from the same guide:

  • Benchtops: laminate $200 to $500 per m²; engineered stone or granite $500 to $1,200 per m². Laminex also says benchtops and cabinetry typically take the largest share of the budget. WorkSafe says engineered stone can contain more than 90% crystalline silica, and cutting it without proper dust controls can cause accelerated silicosis in fabricators, so ask any benchtop supplier how they control silica dust.
  • Appliances: about $2,000 for a basic oven, hob and rangehood package up to $20,000+ for integrated smart appliances. It says most Auckland homeowners spend $5,000 to $10,000.
  • Plumbing labour: $621 to $2,480, covering tap, sink and appliance connections. See our plumber cost guide for hourly rates.
  • Electrical and lighting labour: $500 to $2,000.
  • Gas line work: $345 to $2,500.
  • Flooring: laminate or vinyl $50 to $100 per m²; tiles $100 to $200 per m². Find flooring installers on GetListed.

What pushes a kitchen renovation price up

  • Moving plumbing and wiring. Superior Renovations says keeping existing plumbing and electrical positions saves $2,000 to $10,000. Canstar also notes moving plumbing and electrical points is costly because of labour.
  • Surprises behind the walls. Laminex warns that moving structural elements can uncover outdated plumbing or wiring, unsafe old materials, or damp and rot, and suggests a 15% contingency on any size of project.
  • Islands and pantries. Superior Renovations prices adding an island at $5,000 to $10,000 and a butler's pantry at $5,000 to $15,000.
  • Premium materials. Marble or high-grade quartz runs $1,000 to $2,000 per m², according to Superior Renovations.

Flat-pack vs custom kitchen cabinets

Cabinetry is usually the biggest single line. Superior Renovations puts pre-made cabinets from a supplier like Mitre 10 or Bunnings at $3,000 to $7,000, while custom joinery starts from about $10,000 and can pass $20,000 for a full kitchen. Refinishing existing cabinets is a cheaper middle path at $2,070 to $4,140 plus GST.

Flat-pack does not have to hurt resale. Canstar says property valuers do not care whether a kitchen comes from a DIY flat-pack provider, but the kitchen should suit the house and be practical. Custom cabinetry also takes time: Superior Renovations says manufacturing alone runs 4 to 6 weeks.

Replacing cabinets, benchtops and appliances in the same layout is generally cosmetic. Laminex notes that if you plan to move any walls or services, you may need a building consent.

  • Plumbing: Building Performance (building.govt.nz) says some plumbing work needs no consent if an authorised person does it. That includes repair, maintenance and replacement of sanitary plumbing, and alteration to existing sanitary plumbing (excluding water heaters).
  • Walls and structure: removing or altering a load-bearing wall is structural work. According to the Licensed Building Practitioners scheme, restricted building work is work that needs a building consent and affects a home's primary structure, weathertightness or certain fire safety design. That work must be done or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP), and complaints about LBPs go to the Building Practitioners Board. See our guide to Licensed Building Practitioners. Look for licensed builders, and consider an architect or designer for layout changes.

Your council makes the final call, so check before you start. Superior Renovations puts Auckland consent costs for kitchens at $2,500 to $6,500.

Licensed trades you will need

  • Plumbers and gasfitters: the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board says most plumbing work is restricted and all gasfitting is, so only a licensed person can legally do it. WorkSafe says a certificate of compliance is required for all general and high-risk gasfitting. Check licences on the PGDB public register, or browse plumbers on GetListed.
  • Electricians: WorkSafe says a homeowner who owns and lives in the property can do limited work such as replacing switches, socket outlets and light fittings. A homeowner can only install new sub-circuits if a licensed electrical inspector tests and connects the work. Most kitchen rewiring is a job for electricians.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

Superior Renovations' Auckland estimates are:

Stage Typical time
Cabinetry manufacture (before the build) 4 to 6 weeks
Council consent, if needed 4 to 8 weeks processing
Standard build on site 5 to 6 weeks
Structural or open-plan build 6 to 12 weeks

It says the biggest programme risk is a late cabinetry order, so sign off the design before booking demolition.

How to compare kitchen renovation quotes

Get at least three written, itemised quotes. Use this checklist:

Check Why it matters
Fixed price or estimate Fixed prices cap your risk
Cabinetry type and finish named Flat-pack and custom differ by thousands
Benchtop material and m² Lets you check the per-m² rate
Appliances included or excluded Some quotes leave them out
Plumbing, electrical and gas itemised Shows whether services move
Consent responsibility Who applies, and who pays the fees
Contingency and variations How surprises are priced
Licences LBP, plumber, gasfitter and electrician details

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new kitchen cost in NZ?

Laminex puts mid-range kitchens at $20,000 to $50,000, with low budgets under $20,000 and high budgets over $50,000 (GST basis not stated). Canstar says $30,000 to $50,000+. Auckland renovation companies quote higher, from $26,000 to $35,000 plus GST for mid-range up to $90,000 plus GST for luxury.

How much does a small kitchen renovation cost?

Superior Renovations puts kitchens up to 7m² at $10,520 to $15,000 plus GST for a basic upgrade and $15,000 to $27,600 plus GST for a mid-range refresh. Both sit within or below Laminex's general tiers above. It notes small kitchens can still cost as much as larger ones when they need reconfiguring.

Not usually for like-for-like replacement in the same layout. Moving walls or services may need consent, according to Laminex. Some plumbing alterations are exempt if an authorised plumber does the work. Confirm with your council first.

Is a flat-pack kitchen worth it?

It can be. Superior Renovations puts pre-made cabinets at $3,000 to $7,000 against $10,000+ for custom joinery. Canstar says valuers do not care whether a kitchen is flat-pack, as long as it suits the house and works well.

How long does a kitchen renovation take in NZ?

Superior Renovations says a standard Auckland kitchen takes 5 to 6 weeks on site once cabinetry is made, and 6 to 12 weeks with structural changes. Allow 4 to 6 weeks before that for cabinetry, plus consent time if needed.
